About Us

Our Beliefs, Our History

We are a leading fundraising organisation in East Africa, established in 1971 to expand medical outreach across the continent. We provide emergency medical evacuations for both members and non-members, and we fundraise to collaborate with county governments and other partners to deliver our Outreach Programme. Our goals for the Outreach Programme include eradicating Female Genital Fistula (FGF) in Kenya and building the capacity of health workers.

Our mission is to positively impact communities by providing access to transformative healthcare and building the capacity of local health teams across East Africa. We support healthcare facilities in East Africa’s hard-to-reach areas, delivering life-changing interventions and empowering professionals to create sustainable, self-sufficient healthcare systems for future impact.

Guided by trust, honesty, commitment, and respect, your support uplifts communities and strengthens healthcare systems. Together, we make a difference.

Our History

The Flying Doctors Society of Africa (FDSA) was founded in 1971 by a visionary group led by Maddie De Mott and Dr. Michael Wood. Their leadership, alongside early members like Mrs. Jack Block and Dr. Anne Spoerry, established a strong foundation for our mission. Key collaborations with Morgan Orr & Associates facilitated our launch, while partnerships with AMREF, local governments, and corporate sponsors such as Kenya National Mills were vital in supporting our medical outreach and fundraising efforts.

Initially acting as a fundraiser for AMREF, FDSA has evolved into a key collaborative partner, particularly in implementing the Fistula Programme. Since our inception, we have been dedicated to transforming healthcare across East Africa. Our journey began with innovative fundraising efforts, raising KES 232,180 (approximately KES 7,493,197 today) and securing 1,400 memberships in our first year. This early success allowed us to provide emergency and charity evacuations for those in need. Over the past five decades, FDSA has raised over KES 1 billion for outreach programmes, supporting AMREF’s mission to improve health across Africa and ensuring continued impact through critical initiatives.

Over the past two decades, we have focused on tackling critical health interventions in fistula, providing access to free surgeries and offering capacity building to local health facilities. With more than 434,000 memberships, we have positively impacted over 13,000 beneficiaries, through our Fistula and Outreach Programmes.

Today, we invite you to join us in this legacy of compassion and care. By becoming a member or donating, you can support our ongoing mission to uplift and empower communities. Your contribution is more than just a donation; it’s a lifeline for countless individuals in need.
